Description Portrait of Manuel Josephson (1729-1796). Parnas (President) of KKMI 1785-1791.
Signed and dated 1911 by Albert Rosenthal (1863-1939) after a Jeremiah Theus (1716-1774) original which was part of the Isaac Minis Hays bequest to the American Philosophical Society along with a Theus portrait of his wife, Rachel.

Object Name Painting
Provenance A merchant and Yeshiva educated gun supplier during the French and Indian War, Josephson composed and hand delivered to George Washington "The Address of the Hebrew Congregations in the Cities of Philadelphia, New York, Charleston, and Richmond." Washington replied to the four congregations with the famous letter displayed under our "Presidental Letters" exhibit. Josephson is buried with his wife Rachel (1732-1797) in Spruce Street Cemetery.
