Object Name Painting
Provenance Cohen served in the War of 1812. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1813 and pursued careers as a lawyer and politician. He lost a close election for City Assembly in 1829. He became Chief Clerk of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1840 to 1853, and Secretary of the Philadelphia Athenaeum. He is buried in the Spruce Street Cemetery. Cohen was named after his grandfather Joseph Simon (1712-1804) of whom we currently have an onlaid exhibit of his artifacts.
