Description Portrait of Michael Gratz (1740-1811) . Parnas (President) of KKMI 1784-1785.
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated December 1893 by Isaac L. Williams (1817-1895) after a Thomas Sully (1783-1872) original. See 2010.100.020 portrait of wife also by Williams.

Part of the Isaac Minis Hays bequest to the American Philosophical Society; purchased at auction by Ruth Sarner with funds provided by William S. Fishman, Ruth Sarner and Coleman Schwartz.

Isaac Minis Hays (1847-1925) was a son of Isaac Hays, MD (1796-1879, portrait on north wall) who was a son of Richea Gratz Hays (1774-1858), daughter of Michael and Miriam Gratz.

Object Name Painting
Provenance Born in Germany, Michael Gratz was a frontier merchant in partnership with his brother Barnard Gratz (1734-1801). He was involved in shipping from New Orleans to Quebec, supplied goods to the Continental Army, and traded goods with Native Americans. He is buried in the Spruce Street Cemetery with his wife Miriam (see portrait), and his children Frances (Etting), Simon, Richea (Hays), Hyman, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachael (Moses), Joseph, and Jacob.
