Object Name Painting
Provenance Hyman Gratz was a merchant and banker who served on the directorate of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was also Treasurer of KKMI, and manager of the Jewish Publication Society.

The Gratz Trust for the education of Jews in Philadelphia was established by Hyman Gratz's will after he had no more decendants. Eventually, Congregation Mikveh Israel created Gratz College in order to fufill the purposes of the trust. He is buried in the Spruce Street Cemetery with his parents and siblings .
