Artist William Thurston Black
Description Esther Wasserman (1835-1903) and Child painting by William Thurston Black (1816-1893). Oil on canvas, ca. 1850-1860, 36"x29".
Dimensions H-36 W-29 inches
Made 1850-1860
Material Oil on canvas
Object Name Painting
Provenance Esther Wasserman was the mother of seven children including Dr. Flora Wasserman (1870-1970). What may be her husband appears next in this exhibit. The identical frames and equally inadept handling of hands in the portraits have led some to believe that the same artist created both paintings. The handling of the face of the man, however, is technically more refined.

Esther Wasserman is buried next to her husband Adolph Wasserman (1823-1894) in the Synagogue's 55th Street Cemetery, as is her father, Israel Tobiason (1797-1865). Her mother, Amelia Levine Tobiason (1801-1853) is buried in the Synagogue's Federal Street Cemetery.
