Provenance An inventor named Adolph Wasserman was awarded a medal by the Franklin Institute in 1885 for the invention of a new kind of gas light. He is suspected to be the man who appears in this portrait. Adolph Wasserman was the father of Dr. Flora E. Wasserman (1870-1970). There is also a portrait of his wife, Esther Wasserman (1835-1903) in this collection by William Thurston Black, a well known portrait painter. The identical frames lend some credence to the belief that this is indeed Adolph Wasserman.
